Duane Zehr
Duane Zehr came to Capital High School in the fall of 2009 after having taught for eleven years in Wyoming and Montana. Duane received his Bachelorās of Music Education Degree from Indiana University where he studied trumpet with Edmund Cord. He then moved West to begin his teaching career.
In 2007 Duane was a Northwestern University Summer Music Fellow which led to a return to the Midwest for a Masterās of Music Education Degree from Northwestern University in 2009. He then returned to the classroom with the Capital High School Bands.
Outside of school Duane has remained active as a trumpet player performing with a variety of orchestras, jazz ensembles, and community bands. He was also a founding member of the South Hills Brass Quintet.
Duane lives in Helena with his wife, Dawn, and son, Christian.

Jazz Band
Jazz Band is a āZero Periodā class which focuses on introductory improvisation, standard jazz literature, and big band ensemble playing.
Freshman Band
Throughout the Freshman Band year great fundamental technique is developed which will serve the musicians for a lifetime of music making.
Concert Band
Concert band primarily consists of sophomore musicians. Upper classmen also frequently join this ensemble playing a secondary instrument.
Jazz Ensemble
Jazz Ensemble focuses energy on improvisational skills using standard jazz combo literature.
Symphonic Band
Symphonic band is intended to prepare students for a lifelong involvement in music. To this end, appropriate skills for post-secondary music involvement are pursued. This course also seeks to guide the students in connecting music to their lives and the culture in which they live.
Music Prep and Theory
Music Careers Prep is intended to guide and educate students who are considering music education or performance as a career path. Through the course students will gain foundational knowledge of music theory, music technology, ensemble leadership, and career paths. Concurrent enrollment in a music ensemble is a prerequisite for this course.
