Lauren Miller

Welcome to C R Anderson Middle School 7th Grade English! I am Miss Miller. This is my fourth year teaching at CRA and tenth overall year of teaching. After graduating from Carroll College (GO SAINTS!) in 2012, I moved to Boise, Idaho to teach fourth grade. Realizing how great Montana is, my homesickness brought me back to Helena where I get to spend time with my parents, grandparents, and siblings who are mostly close by in Boise, Bozeman and Missoula! When I moved home, I taught fourth grade at Jefferson Elementary School for five years. After teaching several years, I obtained my Master’s Degree from Western Governor’s University in Learning and Technology.

I have high expectations for each student in my class. Students should also have high expectations of me! I am confident each year that my students teach me just as much as I teach them. To best help your students through this experience and to give them the best chance to be successful, please encourage your child to read every night for at least twenty minutes. Encourage them to try their best and portray an attitude that school is worthwhile! Let’s have a great year!

June 9th Thursday Letter

Happy last day of 7^th grade!

Thank you all for a wonderful year. Now I give you back your child, the child you entrusted to my care last fall. They come back to you a few inches taller, a few months wiser, more mature and more responsible. Although I take no responsibility for their growth as I know they would have flourished without me, it is my privilege and pleasure to have shared this year with your children.

Each year, multiple times a year, my students answer the writing prompt: I wish my teacher knew. Here is what I wish my students knew…

I wish my students knew how much I think about them. I wish they knew how much time I spend trying to make sure that they all have a good school experience. I wish they knew I see greatness in every one of their hearts and minds and that they all will grow to change the world for the better. I hope they know how many smiles they have brought to my face and that at times my heart breaks with worry for them because I deeply care so much about them all. I wish they knew how much I love them and how much I will miss them next year. I wish they knew how special each and every one of them are to me and that being their teacher is one of my favorite things of all time!

June 3 Friday Letter

Happy Friday!

How is next week the last week of school?! I always dread the end of the year and having to say goodbye to my amazing students.

This week, students worked to finish CommonLit assignments and started a final project for unit 4 in which they need to create positive social media posts (on paper or as a skit) to present as a class. Next week, we will complete a few final writing projects and have a fun field trip to Centennial Park on Wednesday.

For the field trip on Wednesday, June 8th:

We are asking that each student bring 2 dollars to help buy pizza and water for lunch. Students can give this to their advisor teacher Monday or Tuesday.

Please send your child to school with weather appropriate clothing and supplies (sunscreen, umbrella, sweater, water bottle ect.)

8:05-8:20: Students will report to their advisor class first so we can take attendance.

8:25: We will walk to Centennial Park as a group

9:00: FUN AND GAMES

11:30: We will provide lunch (Costco pizza and water)

2:15: Walk back to school

Hello Wild Side Parents,

It was another great week of testing. I appreciate how students worked on the tests and remained quiet when they were finished so that everyone could have a calm work environment. These tests are not fun, and I am glad to be (mostly) finished!

Happy Friday!

What a busy week of testing. Testing is never fun, but I am proud of the effort that was put into the Smarter Balanced Assessment by all students. Hopefully, we will start finding out results soon!

Next week, we have another week of testing! We will be working on the iReady assessment for the last time this year.

Please remind your child to charge his or her computer and bring it to school next week. Encourage them to stay OFF screens this weekend 🙂

Last week, I was very impressed with the argumentative essays students turned in. We have worked extremely hard all year on improving our writing and these essays showed just how much students have grown this year.

This week, students continued with unit 4, social media. Next week, we have a normal day on Monday. We then move into a block schedule for the Smarter Balanced Assessment. Please remind your child to charge his or her Chromebook and bring a charger to school as they will be on computers a lot!

Happy Friday!

The end of the school year is always a busy time. This week students wrote argumentative essays about a topic of their choice. It is always interesting to see the different perspectives that exist in our classroom. Be sure to ask your child to read their essay!

Next week, we will continue with our argumentative unit about social media.

The weeks of May 9 and May 16 are testing weeks! We will be in a block schedule for these two weeks. Smarter Balanced is first, followed by our last iReady assessment. Please, if possible, make sure your child is at school these weeks. If students are absent, they will have to make up the testing and will miss more class instruction.

This week students continued with unit 4, the risks and rewards of social media. We learned a new note-taking strategy called a discussion web that allows students to organize two sides of an argument. We also made an argumentative essay “cheat sheet” that will help students organize their ideas for an essay.

Next week, we will continue writing strong claim statements as well as working on a few CommonLit assignments.

Happy Friday Wildside Team,

This week students started Unit 4: Social Media Risks and Rewards: Is social media more beneficial or more risky for teens? How can we promote the benefits of social media over the drawbacks? This unit our focus will be on argumentative writing.

Next week, there is no school on Monday!

News travels fast in a small town. To confirm the rumors, I will not be teaching at C.R. Anderson next year. As someone who attended several schools in the Helena School District as a student and spent many years teaching in the district, it is bittersweet to be leaving. I have accepted a teaching position in Havre, MT in order to pursue what is best for my family. I appreciate the time I spent in this district for over twenty years. My experience working at both Jefferson and C.R.A. were positive and I learned so much from my students, colleagues, and administration. I am thankful for my development as an educator during my time in the district and will use this knowledge throughout the rest of my career. I promise to continue teaching and helping your children to the very best of my ability until the end of the year.

This week, we finished unit 3 (The Giver) by completing an art project, watching the film, and writing a short-constructed response. Next week, we will begin an argumentative unit of study. We will fit as much in as possible before spring testing. We take the SmarterBalanced Assessment the week of May 9 and the iReady the week of May 17.

HAPPY SPRING BREAK!

We are officially in quarter four of the school year! I am proud of how hard your children are working to improve their writing skills and am excited to see their growth as the year continues.

This week we finished the novel The Giver by Lois Lowry. After spring break, we will complete an art/writing project, watch the film version of the novel, and begin an argumentative unit of writing and use the novel as our source. We have a lot to fit in before our last iReady and SBAC assessments.

Please make sure you use this break to rest, rejuvenate, and READ. I am off to Arizona! Have a wonderful spring break!

A special thanks to all those who were able to virtually attend parent/teacher conferences. I always love having the opportunity to talk to parents about their amazing children! Thanks for sharing your wonderful humans with me 🙂

This week, we took a vocabulary quiz as well as a mastery assessment check. This was over our essential standards, citing text evidence and understanding theme. We also continued reading The Giver. I am hopeful we will finish the novel before spring break!

March 11-Friday Letter

Good morning and happy Friday,

This week, students continued reading The Giver by Lois Lowry and completed more vocabulary work. Students will have a vocabulary quiz on Monday.

Next week is parent/teacher conference week! Your child’s ADVISOR teacher should have contacted you with information about the conferences. If your child is in MY advisor, he or she was given information last week. If they did not give you the form, please heckle them so we can schedule a meeting! I will continue asking for the signed form here at school.

Next week, students will be taking a standards mastery assessment for standards RI.7.1 and RI 7.2, citing text evidence, and determining theme. These are the two essential standards that all teachers, not just English teachers, are focused on this year.

This week we continued reading The Giver by Lois Lowry. A reminder that there is a PDF version of the entire novel posted in the posts section of your child’s English Team in TEAMS in case they are ever absent from school. Your child can also find an audio version of the novel on YouTube.

I am proud of how hard students worked this week to keep up on their assignments. By getting things done right when they are assigned, the pile of homework doesn’t build up and suffocate students! This week we continued with Unit 2 and started writing an essay about the challenges of adolescence. We will finish this next week. Our next unit is The Giver by Lois Lowry.

January 20 Thursday Letter

Happy third quarter!

Can you believe we are halfway through the school year? As a new quarter begins, please encourage your child to keep up on schoolwork! We all have a fresh start with no missing assignments. It would be amazing if there were no missing assignments for an entire quarter!

If your child must miss school, please remind them to check our TEAMS page. Each day, I post the assignment for that day. The assignment is typically posted before 8:30 a.m. With more students being absent, this is crucial! They can also email or message me on TEAMS and I will get back to them as soon as possible. I can’t help your child stay caught up on schoolwork if they do not communicate with me!

January 14 Friday Letter

Good morning and happy Friday!

This week students took the iReady Reading test for the second time this year. We will take this assessment one last time, likely in April, for benchmarking for the district. These assessments are only one indication of student progress. I have seen tremendous growth this year in the classroom and am proud of how focused students are on learning each day. If you are interested in your child’s results, please contact me.

Next week, we will continue with Unit 2. We will be finishing this unit shortly and then will move onto my favorite unit, Unit 3-The Giver.

HEADS UP-Quarter 2 ends on January 20th, which will be a half day for students. ALL student work and corrections must be turned in BEFORE January 20th in order to receive credit. I can’t accept work any later than this day as my grades are due! P.S. If your child is ever absent from school and is wondering what they missed in English, I post the day’s assignment EVERY DAY in the posts section of our team in Microsoft TEAMS 🙂

Happy 2022!

What a chilly back to school welcome! I know fashion favors the bold, but if you could encourage your children to wear something other than shorts when it is below zero, that would be greatly appreciated!

This week, students began a second set of vocabulary for unit 2. We will continue to discuss the challenges of adolescence for the next few weeks. Next week, we are taking the iReady Reading and Math Assessments. We will move into a block schedule just for the week so that students have ample time to complete the assessments. I am excited to see the growth from the start of the year.

December 17 Friday Letter

Happy Friday,

As the kids are saying these days….this year really is LIT! What a week at CRA, complete with a fire to start off the week. Students did a great job handling this unexpected event and were able to get back on track with their work.

This week, we continued to work through CommonLit for unit 2. Next week, because we love fire so much, we will have a “read by the fire day” on Monday where students get to enjoy their books by a FAKE YouTube fire….too soon? They are welcome to bring blankets, snacks, and wear pajamas. We will be working on theme on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Due to the short week next week, I will not be sending out a weekly email. I hope that you and yours have a wonderful holiday break–filled with joy, relaxation, and of course reading. I know for me, the best gift of all is getting to teach such amazing humans. Thank you for a wonderful 2021, here’s to a great 2022!

Happy Friday!

What a week at CR! Students have been doing a great job of staying focused on learning even with the holiday season sneaking up. This week we continued working with summarizing and analyzing. We also practiced explaining text evidence and started a poem, “Hanging Fire” by Audre Lorde.

Next week, students will continue with Unit 2. Now is a great time to be checking PowerSchool and reminding your child of his or her missing assignments. I know that we are constantly reminding students while they are at school, but it helps to have everyone on board. It would be quite the holiday gift to have no missing assignments for our entire team before winter break 🙂

Can you believe it is December? This week was another busy one at CR Anderson. Students continued working with unit 2 vocabulary and began reading a short story about dating. The joy of adolescence is our theme for this unit, FUN! We also worked on the difference between writing a summary and analyzing a text.

Next week, we will continue with unit 2 and will be reading a poem by Audre Lorde.

November 18 Thursday Letter

Happy Thursday Wildside Team,

Students worked hard this week to make corrections to their Unit 1 Assessments. We looked at good examples in class and discussed the best way to write a successful short-constructed response. We will continue working on this as the year progresses.

We also started Unit 2, which is all about adolescence. Students completed the unit introduction and began vocabulary instruction. Next week, we will be writing some poetry!

If your child is absent from school, please remind them to check their TEAMS accounts. Many students are falling behind because they are not communicating with their teachers when they are gone. No one likes being left on read!

Next week, there will be NO SCHOOL WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY due to Thanksgiving. I will not be writing a weekly email 🙂 If you have any questions or concerns, please do reach out.

November 12 Friday Letter

Happy Friday Wildside Team,

A special thank you to all families who were able to attend virtual parent/teacher conferences. Communication between school and home is a huge help to your child’s success and I love the opportunity to share with you all the great things your children do each day. This week, students completed the Unit 1 Assessment. This assessment was a written short-constructed response focused on our first standard of finding text evidence. These will be graded and put into PowerSchool as soon as I can grade 130+ paragraphs 🙂

Next week, we will begin Unit 2 in CommonLit which is all about the humorous, wild, chaotic time of life known as…..adolescence!

Happy Friday Wildside Team,

It was a great first week of second quarter. We continued with several stories in CommonLit, had a short-constructed response competition, and had a wonderful library lesson. Next week we will be having a writing assessment!

Please continue to check PowerSchool and keep reminding your child of their missing assignments. The more people who annoy them about doing their work, the better!

October 29 Friday Letter

Happy last day of 1st quarter!

I hope you all had a relaxing MEA Convention weekend and enjoyed a few days away from school.

It is hard to believe that we are done with the first quarter of 7th grade. I am always shocked at how quickly the school year flies. Students had all quarter to turn in missing assignments and/or make corrections to assignments or quizzes. They were reminded VERY frequently of their missing work and grades in English and should not be surprised at their grade at this time. Unfortunately, as of today, I can’t accept work for the first quarter because my grades are due for report cards.

This week, students started a new story called The White Umbrella by Gish Jen and continued discussing what it means to be an outsider. Next week we will continue our unit on being an outsider with another text.

I have noticed that many students are coming to school exhausted. Please remind your child the importance of a good night’s rest and that they should try to limit phone/technology use at night. I am receiving TEAMS chats at all hours of the day and night, even 3 in the morning!

October 8 Friday Letter

Happy Friday Wildside Team,

This week students continued reading The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. Students took a quiz over the first five chapters. We also continued working with “The War of the Wall” by Toni Cade Bambara and learned about developing a theme in a story. This is one of our main standards this year and we will continue to learn about theme as the year progresses.

As the quarter continues, please make sure you are checking PowerSchool frequently. My grades are updated each day. If a student has a missing assignment, I put it into my gradebook as a missing assignment and as a 0 just for bookkeeping. This 0 is a “soft” zero and will be changed as soon as I receive the work. Students can (and are encouraged to) turn in any missing assignment for full credit up until the last day of the quarter. A reminder that students are also able to make corrections to any assignment or test if they communicate with me and make a plan to do so.

Good morning and happy October!

Can you believe that today is October 1st? I certainly am shocked at how quickly this school year is going.

This week, students worked on comprehension and vocabulary skills using the text “The War of the Wall” in CommonLit. Students used text evidence to write a paragraph. Students also read in The Outsiders. Next week we will continue working on these skills.

As it is midterm, make sure you are checking your child’s grades on PowerSchool. We constantly remind them of their missing assignments, but the more people they hear from, the better.

It was a great week of testing! I appreciate how focused your children were during this assessment and am excited to see the progress we make this year.

Next week is our first full week of school, complete with picture day on Thursday! We will be starting library check out as well as our first unit about “being an outsider”. A reminder that your child should not have specific homework for English, but that they should be reading independently for at least ten minutes a night.

Welcome to the 2021-2022 School Year

Dear Wildside Team,

Welcome to 7th grade English! I am excited for a new year, even if it once again includes masks, gallons of hand sanitizer, and Clorox wipes. Hopefully, you all had a somewhat relaxing summer and are energized and ready for a fresh start.

This year in English, I am going to challenge you to improve your writing skills! Writing is vital to success not only in school, but in life. Please make sure you bring paper, a pencil, and your Chromebook to class! I am also going to challenge you to read every day. You will also need to bring a book every day that you can read. I hold myself to the same standard that I hold my students to; so, I read every day too! If you need a book recommendation, let me know, I have thousands!

For students to be the most successful, I encourage frequent communication. Please do not hesitate to email or call with any questions or concerns. I understand that the amount of emails parents receive each week is overwhelming, so I will do my best to keep my emails short and sweet. You can expect to receive at least one weekly email with an update about how things are going in English. These emails will likely start in a few weeks once we are fully back in the swing of things. June 7 to June 9

Happy last week of 7th grade English,

Despite all of the many challenges this year presented, from cohorts to masks to plexiglass barriers, I am thankful that I got to spend this year with your amazing children.

It was a great pleasure to have your children in my class this year. Even though they would have grown without my help, it has been a privilege to see their personalities mature day by day and see how they have developed in their learning. Thank you for supporting my efforts. Thank you for getting up early and driving through rain and snow to make sure your child arrived at school on time, for reading my tedious emails, for reading with your child and helping them learn. Most of all thank you for loving your child.

The year is over so now I return your children to you, the same children you entrusted into my care last fall. I return them with a few more pounds, a few inches taller, hopefully wiser, and more responsible.

My wish for your children is that they can see the light in this world, in themselves, and in others. I hope they always remember to be the person who cares and that their own greatness is not in what they have, but in what they give. I hope they remember to BE THE NICE KID. While I will miss my students immensely, I am excited for them to make their marks and know they will flourish in 8th grade.

Happy Monday Wildside TEAM,

Students did a great job on the SmarterBalanced Assessment last week. It is a grueling assessment, but students were able to stay focused! If you are interested in student scores, I should know results within a few days/weeks depending on how quickly the short-constructed responses are graded by the SBAC folks. The next two weeks we will focus on narrative writing. The first week of June, you guessed it, we have another test! We will be taking the iReady reading assessment one last time. The week after that is the last week of 7th grade English. WOW, where has this year gone!?

Happy last week of quarter three!

Can you believe that next week is spring break and then we only have one quarter left? This year has been wild for sure.

This week, students will be given chances to re-do assignments, review concepts, and ideally improve their grades. We will get a small taste of argumentative writing by learning a new game.

Over break, students will have no real homework. I would love for them to stay off screens and enjoy some rest and relaxation–they should probably read too 🙂

Happy Monday Wildside Team,

Due to our new block schedule, you will now be receiving my weekly emails on Mondays instead of Wednesdays.

Students who are in-person will be in English class two days a week for longer periods of time. This means that students will be doing an entire week of English in the days they are present in the classroom and will not have work to do for English (besides independent reading and work they don’t finish in class) on the days they do not have English. Periods 1, 2, and 3 are on Mondays and Tuesdays. Periods 6 and 7 are on Thursdays and Fridays. Wednesdays are still remote learning days.

DLI students will also only have two days of English assignments. This will be about the same amount of work as before we moved to a block schedule because we are fitting more into each day. They may choose when they want to complete this work during the week so that it fits with their schedule. Their work will always be due to me by midnight on Sundays. I have contacted each DLI student via TEAMS. I highly recommend encouraging your child to check his or her TEAMS chat DAILY and to communicate often with their teachers. The more we communicate, the easier this will be. Remember, I can’t help your child if he or she ignores my messages 🙂

Happy New Year Wildside Team!

I hope you all had a great break and were able to spend quality time with your family and without too much technology.

This week, we are starting the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. I believe this novel is interesting for many reasons, one being that S.E. Hinton was only 15 years old when she began writing the novel and was 17 years old when the book was published. Knowing that such great literature can be written at any age is inspiring to me!

Please make sure that when your child is not at school that he or she is still doing their assigned work for the day. Many students seem to think that on the days they are remote, the work does not apply to them. As a result, students fall behind and have missing assignments. This is stressful for everyone!

Happy Wednesday Wild Side Team,

Can you believe that Thanksgiving is next week? I have no clue where the time has gone this year.

This week students researched the Mississippi River and learned about figurative language.

Next week, the A Cohort students will come on Monday and the B Cohort students will come on Tuesday. There will not be school Wednesday-Friday. We will be reading by the fire for the ENTIRE class period on Monday and Tuesday. So often, middle schoolers are rushed from class to class with no time to enjoy reading. I think this is a vital part of education and find value in offering this time to them.

This week your child practiced some grammar with noredink.com and learned about quotation marks. Coming up tomorrow and Friday, we will be testing your child’s knowledge of reading and annotating a text as well as answering a short-constructed response question.

Please make sure that you are getting in touch with your child’s advisor teacher about parent/teacher conferences. These will be taking place the week of November 9th. Conferences are a great time to discuss student progress and successes!

Happy Wednesday Wildside Team,

I hope you are all ready for a long weekend and that your children spend the time off resting, recuperating, and of course, reading.

Attached you will find our weekly plan for Thursday and Friday (NO HOMEWORK!) as well as next Monday and Tuesday. We are continuing our practice on short-constructed responses. I am impressed with the improvements in writing already this year! Writing is an essential skill, so we will continue to focus on various writing skills and techniques throughout the rest of the year.

A note about grades: Students in my class are welcome to turn in late work! If work is turned in late, I do take points off (one per each day it is late). If you ever see a 0 with a missing in the gradebook in PowerSchool, please know that this is just my way of keeping track of over 100 students in three separate cohorts. This 0 is not set in stone and will be changed as soon as work is submitted. I am always happy to negotiate with students about their grade if they are willing to put in the work. Please encourage your child to reach out if they are concerned about a grade and feel welcome to do the same. I am as flexible as possible and my goal for each child is for them to be successful in English!

Students will watch the instructional video in TEAMS about writing short-constructed responses. This is an assignment in TEAMS. While watching this video, students need to take notes on the parts of a short-constructed response and keep these notes for tomorrow’s lesson.
Students must read at home for twenty minutes.

Lesson 2 (A, B, and DLI get same lesson)
Students will watch a fairytale video that is an assignment in TEAMS. As students watch, keep in mind the question “How did Little Red Riding Hood know the character in the bed was not her grandmother?”. Students should take notes that help them answer this question and have these notes ready for Monday.
Students must read at home for twenty minutes.

Monday 21 · Lesson 3 (A, B, and DLI get same lesson)

Students will watch the instructional video in TEAMS about writing short-constructed responses. While watching this video, students will write a short-constructed response along with their teacher about the video we watched last week.
Students will read independently for twenty minutes.

Tuesday 22 · Lesson 4 (A, B, and DLI get same lesson)

Students will watch a new fairytale video that is assigned in TEAMS. Students will answer a short-constructed response question on their own. This assignment is in TEAMS. This needs to be submitted via TEAMS by Wednesday at noon.
Students will read independently for twenty minutes.

Wednesday 23 · Work completion.

Students have the morning to finish writing their short-constructed response paragraph. This is due to your teacher by noon!
Please email your teacher if you are confused or need any help!
If you are looking for more practice or to challenge yourself, complete the extra practice assignment in TEAMS.
Students will read independently for twenty minutes.

Another wonderful week at CRA. Students worked hard to complete their iReady reading assessment.

This Monday and Tuesday are the last two days of school before we will be on our “normal” schedule. That means that this Monday and Tuesday are going to be review lessons and then we will begin on Wednesday with a new weekly email and instruction. More importantly, it means I am going to stop annoying you with sporadic emails and you will start to only receive long emails from me on Wednesdays 😊

On Monday, September 14, ALL students will be completing the technology scavenger hunt. Students in school will be doing this in class. Students at home need to complete this assignment in TEAMS. It will not be posted until Monday morning!

On Tuesday, September 15, ALL students will be completing the writing assignment that is attached to this email. Students in school will be doing this in class. Students at home need to complete the assignment at home. When done, please share this with me via email!
