Martin Scanlon
Well, here we go again. This will be my 30th year at Helena High and I gotta say that Iâd never imagine being as blessed as I am in my career. Still love the challenge. Life is full of challenges. Never become limited by your challenges. Challenge your limits. Fair enough. Iâm Marty Scanlon. I started with Ceramics my first 4 years here and itâs been all Art classes since. I teach Art I, Art II, and Art IV. Love it all. Live and breathe art. Iâm not great at anything but pretty good at everything. Thatâs not being cocky. Thatâs being confident. Iâve been very fortunate and blessed to make a career of it. And God willing Iâll finish with it. Enough of me.
It’s all about you.
As for all my art classes, I have a syllabus that lays out the descriptions and expectations. Please read through all of it and if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me anytime. We will do what we can do as best as we can do it. Just hang in there and make the effort. No, I donât grade on talent. Donât even use the word in art. So take a deep breath and exhale. It will all be good. Please, no stress. Donât. Done deal. Mediums may be of a challenge but always solvable.
So, here we go. Relax, enjoy, smile, breath, create, grow, laugh. Who knowsâŚyou might surprise yourself with something amazing!

Art I / Weekly Agenda
The elements and principles of design are the building blocks used to create a work of art.
Elements of Art are the visual âtoolsâ that artists use to create an art work â they are what makes up an image or an art object: line, shape/form, value, color, space, and texture.
Principles of Design are the ways artists use the Elements of Art in an artwork â this is âwhat we do with the Elementsâ â how we arrange them, how we balance them, what is being emphasized, etc. The principles are: balance, contrast, repetition, emphasis, and unity.
Art I Weekly Agenda: Â Nov. 11 – 28
Welcome to the wonderful world of Color!
We have just completed reading Ch. 6 (Visual Elements: Value and Color) and now will cover the vocabulary. Â We will then discuss and apply this knowledge visually completing a handout pertaining to the terms. Â Students will then start working on a Four Box Value Scale (4 colors only). Â This will lead up to an open drawing encompassing their skill-set and knowledge of color theory. Â For the students that love illustration the addition of ink will be accepted as well.
Art 2 / Weekly Agenda
Focus on drawing skills:
Creative drawings, shading techniques review and practice, pen and graphite drawings, texture shading, colored pencils and oil pastels techniques, design stylizing techniques, non-traditional art media, mix-media, introduction to watercolor pencils, watercolor techniques, etc.
Focus on drawing, painting and printing media:
Unusual painting media, creative designs â practice eye-hand coordination, pen and ink drawings, pattern values and creative application, introduction to silk screen printing, optical illusions and OpArt â review perspective, collages and acrylic paintings, composition and colors in Art.
Art II Weekly Agenda: Â Nov. 11 – 14
The Pencil Portraits are up in the main hall…check them out anytime!! Â They look amazing!!
Currently we are doing a QUICK Scratch Board Assignment…last of the Black and White Quarter 1 Tour. Â The material this year for the Scratch Board is a little different from last year’s…so patience will be the key as they use the X-Acto Blades to scratch the surface. Â We have seen examples of work, gone over the “lifting” process, selected subject matter and completed drawings in pencil. Â We may add some time to complete. Â Coming up will be Color Pencils!!
Art 4 / Independent Studio
In this class, you will do a project that integrates the knowledge youâve acquired. Youâll have the opportunity to define and articulate critical questions and possible solutions for a challenge that professionals in the art field face today. This class is highly personalized and could serve as a career-launching experience.
This an opportunity for students to pursue a self-directed experience in their professional program that intentionally integrates their learnings.
Weekly Agenda: All Year
Students have their own agenda each quarter. Â The First Quarter’s work was simply amazing….the variety of mediums as well as sculptures (Ceramics was a big hit here) was a great start to the year. Â Great stuff. Â Most of their work will be on display outside the HHS Little Theater in the display case directly opposite. Â Second Quarter Contracts will be collected soon. Â Great group of students….love the passion!!
